Durga Charan Mohanty (Oriya:ଦୁର୍ଗା ଚରଣ ମହାନ୍ତି, Hindi: दुर्गा चरण महांति (1912–1985) was an Oriya Indian "Dharmic writer" (spiritual writer), born in 1912 at "Biratunga",(बिरतुंग), a village under block Gop, near Konark, Orissa. His father "Shri Gunanidhi Mohanty" was a Jamindar and mother "Smt. Sundarmani Mohanty" was a house wife. He was awarded Sahitya Akademi in 1957-58 for his actively development of Oriya language and literature[1] He was a direct disciple of Swami Nigamananda(founder of "Shanti Ashram-Jorhat" and "Nilachala Saraswata Sangha-Puri"). He had written and translated(from Bengali to Oriya) many books for "Nilachala Saraswata Sangha-Puri",[2] subsequently became its Secretary and Parichalaka or Administer.[3] He was also president of the local voluntary association of his own village Biratunga.[4]

Spiritual career

After reading "Yogi guru" and "Premika guru" respectively, authored by Swami Nigamananda, at "Raghunananan" book store, Puri, the "vigraha" (portrait) of Swami Nigamananda present in the books attracted him very much. At the same time he began worshipping this portrait and considered Swami Nigamananda as his Spiritual Master and revered God. He began to search Swami Nigamananda and finally met him in Nilachala Kutir Puri on 20 March 1930, Thursday. At that time he was only seventeen years old and a student of class IX in Puri District School. On first meeting he was overwhelmed by his appearance and realized Swami Nigamananda as Ishwar. Since that day, he became a regular visitor to “Nilachala Kutira" for Swammiji's darshan. He used to note down Swamiji's sayings(upadesh), later he published these "upadesh"(gospels)in books like "Nilachala Vani" and "Nigama Upadesh" . Subsequently he wrote many books for Nilachala Saraswata Sangha and translated Swami Nigamananda's originally written Bengali books :Brahamcharya Sadhana (ब्रह्मचर्य साधना), Yogi Guru (योगिगुरु), Gyani Guru (ज्ञानीगुरु), Tantrika Guru (तांत्रिकगुरु), and Premika Guru (प्रेमिकगुरु), into Oriya language.[5][6] On "trilochanastami" (an Indian festival), the 5th June 1934, he was initiated as disciples of Swami Nigamananda. His contribution to Orissa people as well as "Nilachala Saraswata Sangha", Puri is uncountable. He had opened over hundreds of Swami Nigamananda Ashrams in Orissa and continued to preach Swami Nigamananda's philosophy till he left his physical body on 7 December 1985 at "Biratunga". Despite of his physical death, Nilachala Saraswata Sangha and his followers believe and respect him as "Parichalaka Brother"(परिचालक भाई) as on today quoting words, He remains the Parichalaka(परिचालक) of Nilachala Saraswata Sangha, Puri as he has not handed over this authority to anybody else and he had indicated while answering questions that, "we will continue to remain as is now".

Honors

Sri Durga Charan Mohanty was awarded with the prestigious Oriya Sahitya Akademi award ( an award given for working actively for the development of Oriya language and literature) by Oriya Sahitya Akademi for his outstanding contribution in the form of a written book Bhagawan Sankaracharya which was published in 1957-58. Social Activities

According to few sources, he was also a notable social leader in Orissa.[4][15]

Nilachala Saraswata Sangha celebrated 100th Birthday of Sri Durga Charan Mohanty with much fervor and spiritual enthusiasm on 9 November 2011 with approximate 3500 Nigamananda devotees at Biratunga. This function is started on 9 November 2011 and said to be continued till November 2012. [16]
